Description: The boards are buzzing on http://Community.WorldofGood.com as members gather to discuss how everyday choices impact people and the planet. Join us to learn more about this exciting new community and catch up on the latest topics for social change, including Fair Trade, reducing the use of plastic bags when shopping, ethically-sourced beauty products, and the little ways we can reduce our ecological footprint. Share your thoughts on these topics and learn more about how to join the conversation.
The WorldofGood.com Community (http://community.worldofgood.com) is a central source for anyone who wants to make more informed choices about the products they are buying. Today we’ll explain how you can use it to share your ideas and learn about the impact your shopping decisions make.
Through blogs, discussion threads, and articles by media and organizations, community members can discuss and read up on topics such as how to shop responsibly while traveling, how to start a fair trade town, and what ethical sourcing means.
There are many ways to align your values with your shopping decisions, such as buying Fair Trade coffee, organic food, or Made in the USA or union-made products. If you’ve ever tried to look for these products or wondered why people do this, then WorldofGood.com is a community for you to share ideas and get answers.
1. Visit www.worldofgood.com. 2. Click on “Log In” in the top right hand corner if you are not already logged into eBay – this will take you to an eBay log in page. 3. Use your eBay username and password to sign in. 4. You will be re-directed back to the World of Good Community homepage after login.
Now you can join in on some of the hot topics being discussed on WorldofGood.com! There’s something for everyone, from tips on what we can do as ordinary people to make the world a better place, to inspiring stories about individuals and organizations around the world that are making a difference, to wake-up calls about serious issues affecting your health, community, and the planet.
You can begin by introducing yourself to the community here:
Lots of socially-conscious members are talking about which companies and products are the most responsible…and which need to clean up their act. Weigh in on the brands you know here:
Product (RED) at Gap: Does it really help people, or is it a big marketing ploy?
Socially- & Eco-conscious Beauty Products: What do you look for? What socially- and eco-conscious standards do you look for in beauty products? What are your favorite products that make a positive impact on people and planet?
American Apparel: Hot or Not? One member writes: “I love that they sell sweatshop free items, they're up for promoting immigrant rights and they also promote environmentally friendly practices ...but...I'm kind of miffed about those raunchy ads…What are your thoughts?”
On WorldofGood.com, share and find out the little things we can do to reduce our ecological footprint.
Little things we can do: Every day we are leaving a footprint on the planet. You’ll be surprised to learn all the ways we can reduce our footprint by making little changes each day.
Shopping responsibly without plastic shopping bags: How? Did you know that some environmental experts argue that plastic bags are actually better for the environment than paper bags? Read this discussion to find out why, and share how you reduce your use of disposable bags.
What's "green washing" and how might consumers recognize this when shopping? Ever wonder what it means when something is “natural”? Find out how you can make sure your purchases are as eco-friendly as you want them to be.
How Not to Waste Food: A blogger shares a website with tips on what to do with food that is just about to go bad to reduce waste.
Many individuals like you are discussing big ideas about our role as citizens of the world.
In the discussion A World Without Boundaries, someone asks: I just had a discussion with my husband about helping people outside our country. He feels that we should "take care of our own" first. I believe that there are no boundaries as far as people are concerned. Everyone is "our own" from the US to Africa to everywhere in between, I see no boundaries except the ones we draw ourselves (aside from physical boundaries). I believe we should help all of humankind through every and all means. How do you feel about this subject? Do you believe that we should help "our own" first?
What do you think of Gross National Happiness? Instead of Gross Domestic Product, which measures our country’s performance in dollars, one country is measuring its success based on happiness. People weigh in on whether this is a good idea and even feasible.
Great articles from Ode Magazine, Ideal Bite, and Mercy Corps fill us in on what’s going on around the world by sharing inspiring stories about how individuals and organizations are improving lives, like these articles:

Hi jewishlunar, This is Amy with the WorldofGood.com team. We launched the community portion of WorldofGood.com earlier this year and are anticipating the launch of the commerce platform later this year. And yes, there is tons of great info!
Can any person have a blog or do you need to have a special product or certification? I live in San Francisco and my wife and I bike and we are completely changing our habits now due to the price of gas. Could we have a blog on worldofgood.com? How does the process work? Thanks!

Trust Providers are organizations with a stated vision for promoting the social good and a program for verifying their members’ business practices.
One thing that I think is interesting is how little Americans are actually complaining about the price of gas. I would have thought that when gas went over $4 per gallon the general feeling in the country would be outrage. However, the response has been rather subdued. We have completely changed our driving habits and plan trips days in advance so that we can use our car as little as possible. We also only put in a few dollars of gas so that the car is always on low to help reinforce this point.
It's a small change. Do any other members have ways they have cut back?
Amy, That's great. Taking a train or bus is much more pleasant. I used to bike to CalTrain and then take Caltrain from San Francisco to Redwood City. As it gets more expensive to drive, I hope that many more people change their habits.
I find your comments in post #17 interesting. We too more carefully plan out trips now (in fact, we have decided to take Amtrak to eBay Live in Chicago instead of driving). However, I am not sure I understand the concept of "only a few dollars of gas". Wouldn't that cause more trips to the gas station thereby using more gas and also allowing the price to go up higher in the meantime? Could you expound a little on that idea?

timecatchers -- That is great that you are taking amtrak to eBay live. Be sure to swing by the Global Citizenship booth. A handful of the Worldofgood.com staff will be there. Amy
oh well, I guess I missed him. Amy, Do you know- aren't some earth friendly building products like trex made out of recycled plastic bags? IT'S ALL WRITE ~ Quality Pens & Refills ~ eBay Store TIMECATCHERS ~ Antiques & Collectibles ~ eBay Auctions
We will definitely to that Amy. We are both serious recyclers especially when it comes to composting. IT'S ALL WRITE ~ Quality Pens & Refills ~ eBay Store TIMECATCHERS ~ Antiques & Collectibles ~ eBay Auctions
That is so great about the recycling and composting, timecatchers. Per the recycled building materials, I think you should post a question to the WorldofGood.com community site! There are lots of folks that have expertise in that area, I'm sure.
Thanks, I will do that. I hate to admit I haven't really spent as much time on the WOG site as I wanted to. I have been there a few times since it opened. IT'S ALL WRITE ~ Quality Pens & Refills ~ eBay Store TIMECATCHERS ~ Antiques & Collectibles ~ eBay Auctions
Timecatchers, Right now is a good time to check out the community site. The commerce site is coming later this year and will allow folks to tie all of their values (recycling, empowering producers, etc.) to their purchases. So, be sure to watch for that announcement... Amy
Yes, I know there are a few folks anxiously awaiting the commerce site. I am still not sure I understand how that is going to work. My intial impression was that it was mostly going to represent hand made goods from third world countries- is that wring? IT'S ALL WRITE ~ Quality Pens & Refills ~ eBay Store TIMECATCHERS ~ Antiques & Collectibles ~ eBay Auctions
The site is designed to allow people to "shop their values" for people and planet positive products. There will be a lot of items that fit your description at launch and we will go about augmenting that core product set to include a broader array of people and planet positive goods as we move forward.
Well, it's that time! Thanks for coming, and stay tuned for more WorldofGood.com announcements and workshops. And be sure to come by the booth at eBay live! Have a wonderful day. Amy
A special thank you to jewishlunar and timecatchers for taking the time to stop by with their questions and *thanks* to all the lurkers that took the time to read through the material.
