Description: With a bit of HTML & some graphics, your eBay store can be customized to be uniquely yours. Learn how to create a custom store header, custom store pages & promotion boxes. Certified eBay Stores Designer, Sally Milo of Milo Design (and seller GOing1nceLLC on eBay)will guide you on customizing your own eBay store. (Please note, this will not be a tutorial on learning HTML - there are many resources on eBay & the web to learn HTML and creating web graphics).
Thank you for attending this workshop,Customizing Your eBay Store. I'm a long-time eBay store owner & certified eBay Stores Designer. I've been a graphic designer for a long time & a web designer since the early days of the web. I will provide some info today on how to create a custom store header, custom store pages & promotion boxes. I will not be telling you how to use HTML & to create graphics - those are much more involved topics for which there are numerous tutorials online. But, I will give you some pointers on customizing your own eBay store.
Please ask any questions you may have about points I bring up. I have pre-loaded my presentation, so I'll be happy to answer you regarding any of the content below & to take a look at your eBay store & give you some feedback on what you can do to create your own brand of store.

So we're all talking the same language, I'd like you to first know the sections of an eBay Store layout:
The header is the section in which your store logo appears as well as keywords and any other info you wish to have appear at the top of your eBay Store pages. (Just be sure all you include is eBay-legal! Go to eBay's Help section and search on STORE LINKS POLICY to learn the current policies.)
On the left of most eBay Stores pages is the navigation. Depending on customization & the seller's own settings, this area may include a store search, store categories, user display preferences, store pages & promotion boxes.
Below the header may be promotion boxes if you choose to display such things as "Ending Soon" or "New Arrivals" or even a scrolling gallery of all items in your eBay Store.
The main section of your store homepage generally holds a number of your store items. Some sellers choose not to show these items on their store homepage but rather have links to store categories or other information. Some have a combo of navigation links and store items, such as this sample from my own eBay Store:

The store header generally contains a logo and some text including keywords about your items. It may also include navigation links and a store search box. Including text with keywords is one of the most important features to add to your header as eBay will include these words in HTML meta tags which will assist in google & other search engines in finding your store.
If you are going to create a custom store header, you must change to the theme, Custom Store Header Only. Do so in Manage My Store under "Theme and Display" on the "Display Settings" page.
The image to the right is the custom store header created for this tutorial. In this, 4 images were placed into a table with appropriate text and linking code added. The code which was used for this header is on my tutorial at http://stores.ebay.com/GOing1nceLLC/StoreTutorial.html#custom.

Once you have your store header code ready to go, you will put it into Manage My Store>Display Settings> Theme and Display>Store Header Display. Click on the Change link as shown below to go to the page to add this code.
That opens the page shown below. Click on the Yes, include… radio button as to the left of the top arrow. Paste your header code into the window to the left of the bottom arrow.

At this point, both the default store header & your custom header will show in your store:
To remove the default store header, you'll need to change your theme to allow for the custom header. Under Display Settings>Theme and Display>Store theme, click on the link, Change to another theme. Go to the Easily Customizable themes & select Custom Header Only and its color scheme (which can be next edited by clicking the Edit current theme link in the section shown to right) and click the Save Settings button.
Your custom store header will now appear on all of your store pages as well as your About Me page if you have one.

With a basic eBay Store subscription, you may have up to 5 custom store pages. (Even more available with a Premium or Anchor Store subscription!) Many store owners will make their store landing page one of the custom pages. Some use one or more of the custom pages for FAQs, Grading or further information about their eBay Store or business. Some store owners use a custom page with tips about their industry. Some store owners use custom pages to feature categories within their stores. Some list their Terms of Service on a custom page - but please be aware, it is the terms on your listing pages which are considered the terms recognized by eBay. Terms on a store page or your About Me page are not considered binding as these pages may be edited after the listing ends.
First, how to create a simple custom store home/landing page...
Click on Custom Pages under Store Design on the left side of the Manage My Store page. On the Custom Pages page, click the Create new page link as shown below.

On the next page, Create Custom Page: Select Layout, you may select any of the layouts. I tend to use 1 Text Section, as everything I want is within my HTML. Click the Continue button to go to the next page.

Be careful if you're using a WYSIWYG HTML editing program. In the code { eBayStoresItemList
DISPLAY="1" TABLEWIDTH="95" }, the quote marks must show in the code. Most HTML editors will make the quotes read " in the source code. Notice I have a space after { and before } here - you do not have the spaces in the real code.

Under the Left Navigation Bar section, choose whether you want to show the left navigation bar or not. If you have navigation as part of your custom page HTML, you will want to Hide... If you'll be displaying the default or custom navigation on all of your store pages and do not have navigation as part of your custom page HTML, click to Show...
Click the Continue> button to preview the page content. Save and Publish if correctly displayed.

Promotion boxes are used generally to promote particular items, such as those newly listed or ending soonest - but they can be used for custom navigation as well. Following are instructions for creating a promotion box to use for store categories navigation.
Under Store Design, click on the link, Promotion Boxes. Remove or make inactive any Promotion boxes which you have for a Left Navigation location, then click the button, Create New Promotion box.
On the page, Create Promotion Box: Type, choose the type, Communicate to your buyers and Continue>. Choose Left navigation - Upper for your Promotion Box Location, then Continue. (For Store page where..., keep the default, All category pages in the Store.)
You will then Create Promotion Box: Content and Color.

You will now want to turn off the remaining default navigation. Under Store Design>Display Settings>Theme and Display>Left navigation boxes, click the Change link. Uncheck any or all components to show and click button, Save Settings.

pencoadventures - a google search on "html tutorial" will bring up millions of web sites on which you can learn. You might also search the many threads about such tutorials on the Photos/HTML board. I learned HTML back in the early days of the web, so whatever I used then is long outdated.

pencoadventures - click on settings on the top RH corner adjacent to where is say you are signed in. You have to host the photo someplace like photobucket. The code looks like this:
Roblin's Garage - Classic Auto Salvage Demorestville, Ontario, CANADA

Roblinsgarage - I like the dark teal and reddish colors, but I'd make that paler green a pale shade of the teal. Your store has a piece here, a piece there & several pieces over there. I'd find a way to make it all flow from one section to the next. Using the same colors & fonts can do much toward a cohesive page.

woadieland - You might start with some customized promotion boxes, such as a simple HTML table with a graphic & such text. As with anything, practice to learn & grow.

Ok Fair enough. I'll what I can do to make the colours and fonts a little more consistent. I started with our pre-existing logo as the base as we have real website as well.

I would like some advise what I can do on my Ebay store to increase my exposure. I am new to EBay Stores but know HTML, I am old school and learned to write out by hand. Any suggestion would be great. I did just change the template but feel I have a ocean of text and would love to condense but buyers tend to have so many questions or misunderstanding so I feel I must include the most common problems when completing a transaction.
secretsneakeronline - one of the best things for getting shoppers into your store is to prominently invite people to "see additional items in my eBay store" with a link there.
