I recently joined Worldwide Brands earlier today. What are the average profits we will be working for since we do not own the wholesale merchandise? Is there a rukle of thumb? What about delivery issues? Who is responsible for any defective merchandise sold thru Worldwide brands(drop shipped)on Ebay? I can foresee feedback issues here too.
Hi, I too am farily new with selling on eBay full time since being laid off. I would like feedback on my store for suggestions and improvements. Also, how does one go about getting the licenses needed to sell licensed products that someone mentioned earlier. Thanks!
I've been watching today's discussion because I am interested in selling on ebay. Though I receive offers via email to 'get rich selling on eBay', I don't necessarily want to pay for a bogus program from someone I don't know or trust. Can you point me in the right direction as to how I begin selling on eBay?
Your discussion has been very helpful and I plan to review other discussions in the archives. Thanks!
Just wanted to take a second and thank all the new members for stopping by and the 'old' workshop hands for setting a great example and returning to class.
Since you have retail experience, you are in a really good position to translate that to an online business.
The first place to start in finding a niche to sell in on eBay is to begin by brainstorming a list of potential niches to sell in and potential products to sell.
Get yourself a Product Sourcing Notebook(tm) which is a method we teach at WhatDoISell where you first brainstorm a list of ideas over the next month and then start to narrow them down to three or four niche ideas.
The other thing to look at is your current expertise.
If you have expertise in a particular area (sunglasses for example) even though you can't sell Maui Jim sunglasses, there are many other brands that you could build a business around.
Or expand on that product line - for example - instead of only sunglasses look at selling beachwear accessories.
Once you narrow down your potential niche ideas for 4 or so niches, then you can do your market research and see what the demand is on eBay and the Internet for these products.
Also, we have an excellent free report Product Trends 2008 that will give you ten excellent niche ideas - you can download the free report from WhatDoISell.com at http://www.producttrends2008.com
So far I have limited my selling to the U.S.A. Do you feel I should consider gradual expansion, such as starting with Canada? I am concerned it may provide more problems than it is worth.
Hi iamblessedtobless, The best way to find products to sell is to get specific - for example, if you want to sell remote control cars, your first step is research all the different brands of remote control cars.
Once you get the brand names for specific cars, you'll then want to look up the manufacturer's name and contact information.
At this point, you then call the manufacturer and ask them who their Distributor is in your area.
The Distributor or wholesaler is the person who will sell to you as an online retailer.
LIsa, I just noticed the right sidebar on this page (once I put my glasses on) stating: How To Sell. I should've checked that out before asking you. Silly me! Thanks for an informative discussion and I look forward to more!
Hi trendygirl480, The holidays are a great time to start selling on eBay. But before you purchase wholesale inventory, you'll want to start selling anything and everything from around your home, from family and friends (with their permission of course ) - you can even buy products retail and resell them on eBay.
As you gain experience with selling, you can then start looking to source other inventory.
One great way to make a stream of income this holiday season - at WhatDoISell.com we have a system called the S.T.E.P.(tm) System which stands for Short Term Ecommerce Profits(tm) this method will show you how to buy products for the short term and resell them on eBay.
Before you sign off, I want to thank you for your time today and insightful answers. As I continue to face many uphill challenges, this has been very helpful!
Lisa, While I was awaiting your reply, I looked on your website, and it has GREAT ideas and some wonderful tips! I think I was going at this backwards. I had been looking at wholesalers on the web, and the trouble is that we who are relatively new to this don't know which ones to trust.
Hi antqs_us , In post #45, (I just posted this) I outline the best way to get started with finding a niche to sell in and finding wholesale suppliers.
But let me address the issue of finding a legitimate supplier.
The best to start if you are dealing with a supplier you have never heard about is by looking up their information in the Better Business Bureau reports.
You can find that by Googling "Better Business Bureau"
This information is free and it gives you a good starting point to see if there is a problem with a company.
Then, Google the company name and the word complaint.
If there is a company that is not reputible, you will usually find out about it online.
Finally, purchase a small quantity order first - anytime you are dealing with an unknown company.
Do they deliver? Are their products as described?
Once you see if they are up to the standards you have set, you can then determine whether or not to place further orders from them.
Hi card00973, Worldwide Brands provides names of suppliers, rather than handling the fulfillment of orders - meaning you will work directly with the supplier (as opposed to placing orders through Worldwide Brands).
Regarding profit margin - that will depend on which products you choose to sell. Each product has a different profit margin.
But remember, you want to look at products first, suppliers second! Otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Also, I would recommend giving Worldwide Brands a call to find out more about how their products work - their customer support staff will be able to answer specific questions about the suppliers they feature.
Hi skbr94, Welcome to your new eBay venture! I took a look at your store and your pictures are good, and you have a good assortment of products, but one thing I would recommend is that you scale back on the amount of text in your listings.
Right now they are very text heavy and since buyers like to scan, they will not read all the text.
You can add more white space but bullet pointing your information and creating smaller paragraphs.
Regarding the licensed products - to resell licensed products, you don't need to have a special license, but you do need to have a business license to resell wholesale products.
Once you have your business license then you will be able to work with all types of wholesale suppliers.
To learn how to set up your online business in order to work with wholesale suppliers, we have an excellent audio training at http://workwithsuppliers.com
It will walk you step-by-step through the process!
Hi rurestless26 , Yes there are a lot of "get rich quick" products that promise to tell you how to make money in your sleep in 60 days on eBay.
However, don't buy it - an online retail business is the same as any other ecommerce business - it takes time and work to be successful and profitable.
eBay is simply the marketplace you sell in - and you want to keep that in perspective.
Once you learn how to build a successful Internet retail business and you do it the right way, you will have the knowledge to sell anywhere on the Internet.

Hi mrsdwyersgifts, Global sales can definitely increase your income and it is not really as much trouble as you would think - especially when you get used to the process.
The benefits are many though - a larger customer base, customers who want products that might be a saturated market in the US and expanded income.
Start with Canada and then the UK.
I think you will be very pleased with the results!
